Dizziness?
We know
the cause.
Specialised vertigo assessment and therapy in Rostock. As one of the few IVRT-certified teams in the region, we treat positional vertigo (BPPV), functional dizziness and vestibular disorders. Neck pain is usually not the cause but a consequence of the dizziness — and we treat it alongside. Vertigo, vestibular migraine and functional dizziness — thorough, targeted and with time for your story.
What is actually
happening in the body?
Dizziness is never a diagnosis but a symptom — a sign that the balance system is out of sync. Good to know: most forms of dizziness are very treatable once the cause is clear.
Our sense of balance comes from the interplay of three systems: the inner ear (vestibular organ), the visual system and the deep sensors in muscles and joints (proprioception). When these three sources send conflicting signals to the brain, dizziness results.
Specialised vertigo therapy is about finding out which of these systems is out of sync — and then acting on it in a targeted way. With repositioning manoeuvres, targeted exercises, manual therapy of the cervical spine or a combined vestibular rehabilitation programme.
A medical check-up should come before vertigo therapy — above all to rule out serious causes such as stroke, heart problems or tumours. Once these are ruled out, we can work in a targeted way with physiotherapy — often alongside other treatments.
Which kind of dizziness
matches yours?
Four typical forms that we see every day. Patients often come with mixed pictures — finding that out is part of the first session.
Positional vertigo (BPPV)
The most common form. Small calcium crystals have come loose in the inner ear and trigger brief, intense spinning with every head movement. Very treatable — often in just 1–3 sessions with repositioning manoeuvres (e.g. Epley).
- Spinning when lying down, getting up or turning
- Attacks last seconds to a few minutes
- Nausea, sometimes vomiting
- Almost always triggered by head movements
Neck pain as a consequence
For a long time, neck problems were seen as a cause of dizziness in their own right. We take a more nuanced view: tension and stiffness in the neck are usually a consequence of dizziness — if you feel unsteady, you instinctively hold your neck stiff. We relieve this accompanying pain with manual therapy as part of the overall concept.
- Neck stiffness and guarded posture when unsteady
- Symptoms combined with a swaying sensation
- Worse when head movements are avoided
- Often also headaches or difficulty concentrating
Vestibular migraine
Dizziness linked to migraine — often without classic headaches, but with sensitivity to light, nausea and exhaustion. Physiotherapy complements medical treatment with targeted training of the balance system.
- Dizzy spells lasting minutes to hours
- Sensitivity to light, noise or movement
- Exhaustion after the attack
- History of migraine (personal or in the family)
Functional dizziness
Dizziness made worse by stress, anxiety or overload. Often a vicious circle: the dizziness causes anxiety, the anxiety increases the dizziness. A combination of explanation, exercise and careful loading breaks the circle.
- Dizziness mostly when standing or walking
- Worse with stress, tiredness, in crowds
- Examinations often normal
- Avoidance behaviour and fear of falling
What we
actually do.
Vertigo therapy is not a massage table and not a standard programme. It combines several elements — depending on cause and progress.
Vestibular rehabilitation
Targeted exercise programmes that recalibrate the balance system. The brain learns again to deal with changed information — like an “update” of the inner sensor.
Repositioning manoeuvres for BPPV
Specific movement sequences such as the Epley or Sémont manoeuvre, which guide the loose calcium crystals out of the semicircular canals. Often with immediate effect.
Manual therapy of the cervical spine
We release accompanying neck tension, which develops as a consequence of the dizziness and guarded posture, with mobilisation and soft-tissue techniques on the cervical spine.
Information & education
Understanding what is happening in the body reduces anxiety — and anxiety increases dizziness. This step is often the most important, especially with functional dizziness.
Balance & coordination training
Especially for older patients to prevent falls. We train the three sensory channels of balance in a targeted and progressive way.
Home exercise programme
What happens between sessions often determines success. You take clear exercises home that fit into everyday life.
We test what
the eye reveals.
One part of the assessment is the Dynamic Visual Acuity Test (DVA): while your head is being moved, you read an eye chart. If the image stays sharp, the vestibulo-ocular reflex is working reliably — if it blurs, we get a clear clue to the cause of the dizziness.
How vertigo
treatment works.
Clearly structured, no secrets. So you know what to expect — and can assess progress realistically.
History & assessment (60 min)
Careful listening: when, how, in which situation? Followed by targeted tests — tracking down the cause of the dizziness.
Diagnosis & plan
We discuss the result and agree on a treatment plan — typically 4–10 sessions, depending on the type.
Treatment & exercises
Repositioning manoeuvres, manual techniques, exercise programme — depending on the diagnosis. You get homework for between appointments.
Re-assessment
We measure progress (or the lack of it), adjust the plan and decide when treatment can end.
What does insurance pay?
Fully covered
With a prescription from your doctor (GP, ENT, neurologist or orthopaedist), statutory health insurance covers the treatment. Co-payment: €10 + 10% per prescription.
Full billing
We bill according to GebüTh — you submit the invoice to your private insurer. Most plans cover vertigo therapy in full.
